Free Credit Report

Are you entitled to a Free Credit Report?  If you fall into one of the following categories the Credit Reporting Agencies are obligated to provide a free credit report.

  • Residents of Colorado, Georgia, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, or Vermont are entitled, based on state law, to one free credit report a year (2 in Georgia).

  • Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you are entitled to a free credit report if you meet one of the following criteria:

1.  A company takes adverse action against you, such as denying your application for credit, insurance, employment, or rental housing based on information from a CRA and you request your report within 60 days of receiving the notice of the action. The notice will give you the name, address, and phone number of the CRA.  Only the CRA in the notice is obligated to provide a free credit report.

2.  You are entitled to one free credit report a year if (a) you're unemployed and plan to look for a job within 60 days, (b) you're on welfare, or (c) you believe your report is inaccurate because of fraud.

If you qualify for a free credit report the Credit Reporting Agencies require the order be placed by phone or mail (not through the internet ) and the report will be sent to you through the mail (online access is not an option).  For information on immediate online access to your report or if you do not qualify for a free report and would like to order a report please click here.

If you do not qualify for a free report you should still consider ordering a credit report to assure that your report is accurate and avoid problems in the future.  This is especially important if you plan on applying for a mortgage, credit card, other types of credit, housing, or employment. n
